i just can’t explain it…

Posted in life at 11:07 pm by Brandon

Maybe it’s because I’m within a month of becoming a dad. Maybe it’s because I’ve got other things to occupy my ever dwindling mental capacity. Maybe it’s because it’s almost midnight and I read about 300 pages of academic drivel surrounding the advent of new communication technologies from the telegraph to the Internet this afternoon.

But whatever the reason, I feel like I give up. No, not the blog. (Although, if you’re around and reading this, you’re a hardcore badchristian fan… ;) )

I’ve been feeling this way for a while now. Maybe it’s the mellowing effect of age, but I’m tired of being a radical Christian. I’ve never been much good at it anyway. I think that over the course of the past few years this blog has occupied this little corner of the Internet, I’ve been consumed with an ideology rather than a specific spiritual conviction.

I suppose I’m guilty of living life as a liberal instead of living life as a Christian. Progressiveness isn’t a good life value. Being Christ-like, well, I’m willing to give that a bit more of a shot.

A note to those of you who think you’ve won: You know who you are. You and I have argued about politics, faith, etc. We’ve pontificated about Bush v. Kerry, and the like. I’ve got news for you…I’m still a liberal. I haven’t particularly changed my mind about things. But I am sick of being dragged into meaningless political arguments for the sake of argument.

Okay, that’s all. Perhaps more fleshing out of this general announcement in the future. Perhaps not.

I couldn’t believe it when my RSS reader said you had a new article! I thought there was something wrong with my browser. I don’t always agree with what you say, but don’t give up, man. You always write thoughtful and entertaining blog posts.

Glad I discovered your blog. I appreciate your honesty here. I live with a constant tension of not really fitting into any Christian ideologic realm, while appreciating the emphases, concerns and people that make up many of those realms.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you said, “Being progressive (substitute whichever ideology where I choose to hang my hat at at any gien moment) isn’t a good life value. Being Christ-like, well, I’m willing to give that more of a shot.”

I have a friend who is a pastor. About the most mellow man I’ve ever met. Strong in his convictions, open to hearing the criticisms people make of his approaches. Even open to people who do things very radically different from the way he does (which admittedly is not all that radical, but quite steady and consistent) and who criticize him. He talks about the ditches we fall into when we get so hung up on opposing one “brand” or way of being Christian/doing church. If reacting against something is what drives us, or being something (anything other than Christlike) is what we build our philosophy around, well, most likely we’re going to end up in the opposite ditch of what we’re trying to avoid. Far away from the original error we hated to be sure, but still a ditch.

It’s not so much about being middle of the road, wishy-washy, but keeping focused on being like Christ and not the other agendas we think are important (they may have importance and purpose, but not as the foundation). I don’t know if I’m making sense here, but your post struck a chord with me on this topic, which I think about a lot. Maybe one day I’ll get around to writing a post on this topic and linking back to you, but in case that day never comes, I wanted to say thanks for your honesty.
