These bits of news were what RelevantMagazine.com decided were particularly newsworthy today:

In an interview with MTV, UK pop-darlings Keane said that prior to recording their new album, Under the Iron Sea (which hits stores June 20), the band nearly called it quits. Well, there’s trouble in paradise for the American Idol crew. Host Ryan Seacrest has said that he is not talking to Paula Abdul after the two have publicly bashed each other on talk shows. Simon has wisely decided not to take sides in this catfight …4/26/06 | 9:33 AM

Click here or watch Oprah to get more info about the movement …4/25/06 | 7:44 PM
So, Mr. Strang, you run a for-profit (yes that means he’s paying people) magazine, and this is the best news about God, Life, and Progressive Culture you can offer me? A spat between Ryan Seacrest and Paula Abdul, you remind me to watch Oprah for my social justice needs, and you inform me that Catholics in Croatia are banning bikinis. Sweet crap, man!
Could we find a bigger Merchant of “cool”?

God has nothing to do with American Idol LOL

I wrote a couple of articles for one of Mr. Strang’s publications an eon ago, and if he has not changed since then, I can give you my semi-informed opinion on how that “news blurb” came about.
SS informed his staff that they had to stay abreast of the currents of culture. So, they bookmark and plant keyword markers for all the items they see in People magazine and then throw them up on the news ticker. That’s why you’ll see American Idiot references, Victoria’s Secret shots, hip-hop dalliances (to be hip), and perhaps a few Brangelina quips. What you won’t find is Darfur, oil prices and Supreme Court decisions on personal property.

Listen… it’s the best thing in the world to see “relevant” become “irrelevant”. It always makes me feel very pre-cognitive. Par for the course in my opinion. Eventually you become what you hate (or at least in this instance, what you are trying to not become). Damn…on every page of their site is fancy flash banners, offers and promotions to buy this or that… it seems just like a “cool” version of TBN. At least, I believe, in this instance they are not a “non-profit” group, so in that instance I say more power to them.
We’d probably become this way too Brandon if you tried to make badchristian.com or I tried to make SCP our full-time gigs. Its a really hard thing to maintain that integrity and consistency to the cause (the anti-establishment ideal) without also becoming (or worse, appearing to become and thus labeled) a sell-out.

The hot news for today at Calvin, if you care:
more censorship from Student Life… this time, they kill the Spoof.
Read the real spoof at www.calvinspoof.com
Check out the GR Press article (published Saturday).
Read Student Life’s response (linked from Calvin’s front page).

From what I’ve read in Relevant, this doesn’t surprise me. Considering such a bold name for a magazine, one would think….or maybe it’s just another case of the Christian sub-culture “excellence-proofing” itself.
The less-nasty named Paste delivered an article back in December that proves to be helpful.
