to 61 percent of the people that read this blog

Posted in life at 2:45 pm by Brandon

Get Firefox! It would seem (based on my calculations) that 61 percent of you use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to visit this site. Now, I’m not trying to wish any ill will on people for using but Microsoft Internet Explorer. In fact, if you want to keep visiting this site, using Internet Explorer to do your browsing dirty work, I can honestly say I don’t care a bit. I’ll think no less of you.

However, if you were curious about why about 30 percent of my current browsing public has switched to Firefox, (and another 9 or so percent browses on a different platform altogether) here’s what I think might be going on.

First, this blog is not designed to be seen in Internet Explorer (IE). I have given no thought to the way the design appears in IE and I don’t really ever plan on taking the time to do it. If things get messed up in IE, so be it.

Second, IE let a whole host of spyware sorts of programs run amok on your computer, thus slowing down your performance and increasing the likelihood of a system crash. Since I started using Firefox about 2 years ago, I haven’t had a single piece of spyware get onto my computer. I’ve heard of IE users who can rack up over 100 spyware programs on their machines in less than 3 months.

Third, for what I use it for, Firefox offers greater functionality and add ons than are available through the Microsoft browser. For example, I make use of the Web Developers Toolbar from Firefox that allows me to be able to see layout features, alter stylesheets, and view source code for other sites (among many other things.)

If you care about system performance, browsing speed, fewer popups, and less spyware, Firefox might be for you. And, here’s the best part: It’s free. That’s right you don’t have to pay for it.

All it takes is about 10 minutes of your time to download and install the program. You’ll be glad you did.

I use both browsers. When I get my mac, I’ll be using Safari as well. It’s important to me, as a web programmer, to ensure my code and design works and functions in all three browsers flawlessly and with exact duplication.

I think firefox is great for it’s plug ins. Being an avid computer user, I can use IE and still go without getting spyware on my machine. I know people who have switched to FFX and still get loads of crap on their computers. People just don’t know how to detect the crap, honestly. I don’t think it’s IE’s fault, necessarily, though in it’s present version and build, it’s more susceptible to exploits.

That being said, your site works and looks fine in IE 6.

I use IE only for those sites that won’t work without it, and there are a few out there. I understand that IE is just more forgiving to non-compliant code, so we’re talking about poorly-designed sites here.

Word to the wise about Firefox, though: if you don’t fiddle with the settings, it can be a massive resource hog. I’ve had Firefox taking up more than 130 MB on my laptop.

I just started using Firefox too, and I like it. Personally, I don’t miss IE very much, except for when I want video sport highlights and I can usually find a workaround…..

    so there.

    Two words: tabbed browsing.

In Firefox, I can right-click my Blogs folder, and say “open in tabs.” While my entire system grinds to a halt for a minute or so, I can live with that…because after that I can just read-close-repeat until I’m done with the 30-something blogs I pull up each time I read.

Of course, I’ve also greatly enjoyed the lack of spyware. Anymore, I only use IE for online bill-pay (FF doesn’t work with my bank’s site) and real estate/MLS work (ditto).

I’m with Zeke and Allison. Firefox’s tabbed browsing rocks and - Joe - while I respect Macs, you’ll hate Safari compared to Firefox. Safari is worse than IE when trying to view pages correctly.

    On what planet?

Safari and Firefox display clean code flawlessly, with very few exceptions.

The only reason that most of the Web doesn’t look like complete crap on IE is because web designers are forced to write god-awful CSS hacks to compensate for the fact that IE is such a terrible browser.

brandon, with the type of people that read your blog, my guess is that you’re only talking to about 32% of your readers, not 61%. :) for those that haven’t switched yet… they will.

I switched to Firefox a while ago, well, maybe about a year ago actually. And I’m lovin it. I have IE7 but it sucks. Definitely they try to copy some of the features of Firefox now, which means that Mozilla is a leader now as far as browsing standards. Also I like the way Firefox displays pages, esp. CSS-rich pages. It just seems a little neater.

So what can I say. Apple sucks. Firefox rocks.
