Most of you aren’t in the habit of dropping by this place to keep tabs on my personal life, so if you’re not interested in this little tidbit, feel free to ignore it.
A while back I mentioned that Jen and I were both applying to PhD programs at the premier land grant institution in Michigan, and eventually I said that we’d love to move our little family out to East Lansing so that we lived in the same city for a while. Eventually, I was admitted into my PhD program and we seemed one step closer to our little dream.
Well, God, Fate, fate, or whatever you believe makes things happen acted. It turns out that the people in charge of doctoral admissions into Jen’s graduate program are chronic drug abusers of one sort or another, because they chose not to accept her application for admission into the program.
Allow me to brag for a minute. My wife is one smart ass motherfucker. Now, you may be thinking to yourselves, “How smart could she be Brandon, she married you?”
“A minor lapse in judgement on her part.” I would reply.
Seriously though, my wife is the smartest person I know. And, she’s hardworking too. Thus, I was pretty shocked that she wasn’t offered admission into her program. In the end, though, she’s pretty happy with where she is right now. She’ll just continue being one of the greatest highschool english teachers known to all of man or womankind.
The downside is that I’ll keep driving back and forth to East Lansing from Grand Rapids, creating a carbon footprint the size of Karl Rove’s ego. C’est La Vie I suppose.
For now, though we’re both a little disappointed, we’re busy planning a trip to Europe that we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to take before and we’re coming to grips with the idea that life won’t change like we thought it might. And, in the end, we both like our lives right now.
However, if you feel the need to feel sorry for us, you may do so. Expressions of sympathy would be most appropriately communicated via donation to the Send Brandon and Jen to Europe Fund I’m starting. Paypal is appreciated.

I’ll contribute $30 to the Send Brandon and Jen to Europe Fund in exchange for $30 contribution to the send Nicole and WaspJerky to Europe Fund.

Done and done.
Are you guys seriously going to Europe next summer? If we’re both on the continent we could catch up…
I just realised the stupidity of that sentence (mid-keystroke no less) given the fact that we now live less than a 3 hour drive from one another.

Yeah, we’ll be there the end of May, following some mission work. If you’ll be around Budapest…. Yeah, we’d love to make it to blogvention, but that’s unlikely. Bummer.

I’m really sorry to hear this–I’ve really been hoping for you both! I’m in the midst of looking for jobs, so I understand the problem of trying to find a way to bring two lives into the same locale.
It was good to meet you in Beantown. (Clearly, I’m a better at lurking than at commenting.)

Brandon,
Sorry dude. PhD programs really suck. They seem to be so freakin’ random these days. Prayin’ for y’all!
