on being riddled with anxiety

Posted in life, grad school at 11:11 pm by Brandon

SpartyTomorrow I’m going to be doing a campus visit at Michigan State. As many of you know, I’m applying to the Ph.D. program in Communication–in the same department where I’m currently completing my MA in Communication. I really haven’t any reason to be so angst ridden, yet I find myself here, at my kitchen table with my stomach in knots. I should just be calm. I’ve worked so hard it’s probably been unholy at times, so at very least, I’ve left it all on the field. I don’t even know if I’ll find out if I’ve been admitted to the program or not.

Perhaps part of the pressure lies in the fact that Jen and I have a little plan. Well, it’s not so much of a plan as it is a dream. We’d desperately love to live, work, and study–just for once–in the same city. You see, we’ve both applied to Ph.D. programs at Michigan State. If all went well, we could go to school together, keep the same hours, and (wonder of wonders) see eachother for more than 30 minutes a day. (You think I’m exaggerating, don’t you?)

For the past 2 years our respective busyness dials have been firmly buried at “crazy.” I’m not so ignorant so as to expect that pursuing concurrent doctoral degrees will be a proverbial walk in the park, but one would have to hope that at very least we’d keep the same hours. Anything would be an improvement over a collective 3 hour daily commute.

[/whining]

All that to say, I’m nervous. And, even if things work out favourably for me–as I hope they will–I’ve still got to keep the ole’ fingers crossed for my beloved.

In the end, I suppose, things will be what things will be. The earth will keep turning and the sun will keep burning, I’m just praying that they do their turning and burning with my wife and I in the same zipcode.

I really hope that you get in - i finished my undergrad at state a little more than a year ago, and i actually had a friend of mine in the Comm Phd program as well. He really loved it there, so, take that to the bank. He’s actually a 27 year old prof at BC now.

But, i don’t think its whining to want to be able to coincide academic pursuits with, you know, silly things like marital bliss.

Also, once you get there, please take up a weekly residence at the peanut barrel on grand river ave. Best beer and burgers a strapping young lad could ask for. mmmmm….

    Hey,

Let us know how it goes. We’ll send up a prayer for you. Although I still don’t know how I feel about praying, but for you, I’ll do it.

De-lurking to say good luck. I’ll pray for your situation, which sounds pretty exhausting.
