This could be totally off base, or, just WAY uncouth but I just can’t help it any more.
Am I the only one who can’t help but smirk and laugh uncontrollably with my hand covering my mouth when some ‘emergent church person’ starts talking about being ‘missional’.
Am I a pervert?
Probably.
But, then again, so are these guys.

I noticed this a while ago…
And the Dutch are all perverts aren’t they? Or maybe it’s the French.

No, it’s the dutch.

Yes, that’s right - it’s not for nothing that nun’s blush when they hear the words “Dutch Loving”….

Oops - that should be nuns …

In my church (part of Mennonite Church Canada, which is partnered with Mennonite Church USA), missional is part of slogan (or mission statement, whatever, for maybe 5 years now). I thought we’d get over it but no, it seems to be sticking. I used to think we used it because we were afraid of the word evangelical, but now I don’t know what to think.

Hey, could you flesh out a little more about why this particular language rubs you the wrong way (if I understand you correctly)? Is it the trendiness of it?
Benjamin said,

I could get behind that as well Brandon….

Perhaps, Benjamin, you could share a bit about why the word missional rubs YOU the wrong way.
Brandon said,

Yes, Benjamin, now that I think of it, you would be a great person to flesh that out for us all.
Really, people, I can’t be blamed for my bad behavior in this thread. I’ve been given far too much ammo–and Benjamin stopped by and the two of us really shouldn’t be left alone.

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

I thought about commmenting earlier, but it seems you guys are on top of it.

On top of it we are, indeed. Always glad to entertain a threesome, though, Zalm.

My goodness. This from the guy who elsewhere today advocated a hostile takeover of my ass?

Er… correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that what’s usually refered to as “Greek” loving?

Not to try and get this train back on the tracks (I enjoy sophomoric humor as much as you guys), but your post did raise a question for me. On the whole, you seem to have plenty of good ideas mixed with some that you like to espouse if for no other reason than to be a contrarian. This one seems to be an example of that…I take it you are one who abhors trends and follow-the-crowd types, and emergent has equal doses of each. However, the idea of “being missional” predates emergent by oh, say 1700 years. The early church, and especially the earliest monastic traditions, had a strong belief in the role of followers of Jesus to be ambassadors in the work of God, seeing much more in the gospel regarding our role in the work of God’s kingdom vs. sitting around and waiting for the fire insurance policy to kick in. I think emergent-thinking people who are involved in the conversation are simply trying to re-acquire that sense of joining God in doing what He is doing, ushering in the kingdom in a radically subversive way. So, I guess my point in all this is that, like many of the ideas and terms that emergent is using, missional is not a new or hip idea, but rather one that is being reclaimed and hopefully remains true to what the gospel really is.

For the record:
I have no problem with emergent folk being ‘missional’ (though the institution of the word as a ‘buzzword’ seems a bit over the top–since like so many emergent things most folks haven’t a clue what the hell it means).
I’m hardly being contrarian, either. I’m just enough of a pervert to laugh at sophomoric things. That’s all.
Just a pervert. No more.

The language of the “emergent church” is becoming just as confusing to understand as the Church of Scientology. Hmmm.

How dare you call us perverts over at SCP? I am totally offended. Yet strangely, on the other hand, highly aroused.
From Kingsmans Comments:
Another favorite buzzword of the “emergent” that bugs me is “conversation”. Come “join the conversation”. Are you part of the “emergent conversation”? Over and over and over again. Ugh!
And I do not think you usher in the kingdom in a radically “subversive” way by forming a 501c3 corporation, then begin soliciting donations and then appoint a National Director/Coordinator/King to lead your “non-organization”. The cats kinda out of the bag!
Sorry, its Monday, and maybe I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.

Steve,
Glad you can sit around and throw stones at every glass house you see…if only the world would shut up and just listen to your ideas on everything, maybe it’d all be fixed.
Sorry, its Wednesday and maybe I am tired of the Michael Moore-type tirades and polemics who can only cast criticism, yet never have answers or better ways. Way to stay off all the bandwagons and be the conscience for the rest of us…

Forgive me…that was rude and arrogant on my part. My bad…
