my first podcast

Posted in podcasts at 11:56 am by

Well, classes are over for the semester. I’m thrilled about that. With the advent of summer comes more time to learn things about the information superhighway, and I decided my first lesson would be on recording and publishing my own podcast.

So, I meandered down to my local wikipedia outlet for information about, well, everything…(including a really nice treatment of statistics if you were interested.)

It turns out that there’s some nice software that’s free for the taking made possible the folks at audacity.com. If you, too, are interested in this software, you should do a google search for audacity downloads or go to audacity.sourceforge.net, all at your own risk of course…but it worked just fine for me.

So, the long and short of it is that Thelma and I made our very first co-podcast this morning.

And, with no further adieu–here it is.

    Maybe I should explain a bit further…..

It’s been a long time since I saw Mr. Powers in, uhm, action, I guess, but it’s not something easily forgotten.

An illustration is probably in order here. Let’s say you happen to be at Home Depot early one Saturday morning, and you see the overweight dude in a dirty t-shirt & sweatpants. There’s always one lurking around - the guy with the long hair pulled back from his receding hairline, four days removed from his last shower/shave.

Put a pair of coke-bottom glasses on him, and you’ve got Ed Powers.

Anyways, the best part (from a purely I-only-watch-it-for-the-articles standpoint) of Mr. Powers’ err, “body” of work is the part where he sits on the couch, (bed, inflatable wading pool, ceiling mounted swing, etc) next to his next victim(s) and interviews her/them. To maintain the amateur feel of the whole production (and because people would still buy it if dubbed in fm static), the sound quality is probably a step below your podcast.

Anyways. I’m debating - should I smoke a brisket or a pork shoulder this weekend?

Well, welcome to my comment. Babette and I are sitting here, and we’re pretty excited, aren’t we Babbs? Yes, we are. Babbs turned her head and blinked when she heard Thelma’s name over cyber space. And I was happy just knowing she was “there.”
Now, I wonder if the tone of comment land would change if our voices were employed and not merely our scrawlings? What do you think, Brandon?
I really enjoyed hearing your voice.

Podcasts rule. There’s something more affecting about a human voice vs. text. You might consider lowering the bitrate as low quality is hardly noticeable on voice (compared to music), which would lessen bandwidth costs for dialup users and, especially, yourself (if that’s an issue).
