I’ve been thinking lately. I know, bad habit. Anyway–apart from that attempt at self-deprecating humor–I really have been thinking. I’d like to shorten some of my entries. Of course, the ones that aren’t finished unless they’re the normal lenghth, they’ll still be long. But, the ones that really only deserve a half a page, I’ve decided to just give them a half-page, rather than prattling.
So, wonderful weekend this weekend. Great times, great music. Wilcox was fan-friggin’-tastic. His wife Nancy Pettis was along for the show (as was his son Nate.) There’s something special about seeing a musician on stage singing about (and several times with) the object of his love. Nancy has a beautiful alto voice that pairs so nicely with David’s. Seeing them up there really made me miss my wife (she was at home in Grand Rapids while I was away in Indianapolis for the show.)
Wilcox always gets my brain moving. He’s really folky (perhaps even a bit too ‘folky’ for me.) Nonetheless, he really gets me thinking. I want to get some of those thoughts into a post. Then, I’ll have sort of an outline for this week, and I’ll be able to remember exactly what it was that was running through my mind.
So, here’s my short-list (from things at the Wilcox show and this weekend’s events.)
Why I could live in Indianapolis
Love and fear
How to be a good husband
Being mad at churches
A good person
The dirty little ‘l’ word
Wow. That was easy. Believe it or not, I think there’s some good stuff there. Check back if you like and see what we come up with. Any thoughts about any of these topics (broad though they are) are welcome.
Thanks, and good nite.

I could probably live in Indianapolis, but that would probably end my “never been east of Bismark” streak that I’ve been working so hard on.

I like Wilcox and have a couple of his cds. Amazing voice and really phenomenal guitar player. His concert here though kind of bugged me. Was a little too preachy and kept calling up some kids from a local choir to sing with him. They were good, but not who we paid to see. But then again, as you note, he is very folky. Our tastes have changed a bit lately and we are less happy with the straight folk.

I think my biggest pet peeve with Wilcox fans is the fact that they look for the obvious message…but fail to catch the nuanced message that even David himself probably doesn’t catch. The accidental grace in the music, to me, is the most appealing, rather than the blatant, blunt grace that people talk about because they feel like they ‘get’ his music.

This is inspired BY your comment Streak, not about you, by the way.

There are days in my life where the music of David Wilcox is the only thing that keeps me breathing.

As a former Indianapolis resident I can say its a great town. You’d probably enjoy it. I look forward to hearing what you liked about it when you went to hear Wilcox.

i’ve lived in indianapolis 2 1/2 years. i don’t know where you’re from but research it first. there’s not a damn person who will call you back if you leave them a message unless they’re NOT from indianapolis. frustrating as hell. but hey, the pacers are giving us some spotlight.
