my life

Posted in culture at 10:30 pm by

It occurs to me that I prattle at length every day or so and you people are kind enough to listen and read. But, truth be told, we know very little about eachother. Or, at very least I know very little of you and you of I. (Some of y’all seem to know eachother though…however that works?!?!)

So, meet me. My name is Brandon. I’m a whopping 25 years old, though I’ve got a few gray hairs! I used to work as an admissions counselor at a small private college–Calvin–in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After three years working in the pseudo real world I decided to throw in the towel. I quit my job and went back to grad school. That was two months ago. I’m supported by my wife both financially and emotionally.

4 days a week I drive to East Lansing to do my graduate program which I’ve mentioned before. At school, I’m particularly interested in leadership emergence in small group communication studies. It’s likely that my thesis and dissertation will concern this topic.

My wife and I (her name is Jen) own a home on Grand Rapids’ north east side. It’s quite a cute little place–we’ve gone all trading spaces on it. Though lately between fixing up the house, going to school, and finding time to sleep, there’s been precious little time for anything else to find room on my schedule. Nonetheless, we did find a bit of time tonight to purchase new curtains and curtain rods and get those up around the room.

Jen and I have two children. Well, fur kids to be exact. Paige (yes, named after Paige Davis) and Thelma (who was named after Thelma from Thelma and Louise…but we didn’t name her, she came that way from the shelter–Crash’s Landing–because she was so laize faire). Anyhow, Paige is Jen’s cat. By that I mean that Paige loves her mommy (Jen) and thinks her daddy (me) is an asshole. Thelma on the other hand loves anything that moves. Due to my proclivity toward insecurity I was naturally drawn toward Thelma.

My wife Jen is the brains of the operation. She’s currently teaching in order to support my habit of going to school compulsively. Once I’m done with school (there’s no more degrees to get) then Jen gets to do whatever she likes. At least that’s the current agreement. She downplays her intelligence, but I know better. I think that if pressed she’d tell you she wants to complete her PhD eventually as well.

I’m a PK. I know that didn’t surprise anybody, I was one of those badass preacher’s kids. Ultimately, though despite my badassedness my parents largely (though not completely) agree that I turned out.

Hmmm…that’s really all I can think of for now! But now it’s your turn, tell me about yourselves! I’m curious.

Thanks for the bio, Brandon (and Jen).
    Okay, I’m Pat (Gasp!-Really??)
I too live on the NE side of GR, in an old house that requires most of my attention and finances. I am 42 years old, with no children but my Babette, who just turned 10. I have worked for Public Health for 14 years in various roles.
I have never finished any degree; several false starts between husbands.
I have been a seeker all of my life, but dove deeply into faith in Christ 22 years ago. I’m still a seeker of truth, but within the context of Jesus Christ, who has captured my heart.
I think you probably know the rest of me from my blog.
So…we may be neighbors? Email me if you’d like, BC.

    Brandon,
Don’t let Pat fool you. She doesn’t brag on herself enough… She works in public health - like she runs the place. Like if anything bad ever happened in GR, the entire town would be under her care. And she may not have a degree, but she is a theologian extrodinare. She studies God with a passion few ever have. Furthermore, she is a pastor incognito. She has always shepherded, guided, taught, encouraged - and she has done such for more people than I have ever cared about. There are many more things about Pat - like the fact that she talks to her neighbors, owns a jaguar AND a pick-up, owns powertools AND uses them while looking beautiful, and on and on…

As for me, I do NOT look beautiful while using powertools…! And I usually can’t figure out how to turn them on anyway…

    More later.

Ok, my turn. I’m Headless aka Lois. I’m a whoppin’ 30! (Holy crap! When did that happen?! Oh, yeah…they said it was spiked…) Anyway, I’m born and raised in the great state of Texas. Originally Lutheran, though I don’t remember anything about it except felt sheep and felt Jesus, live Christmas nativity and singing that song about “little baby ducks and old pick up trucks.” I don’t even remember what song that is!

When I was 12, we converted to Missionary Baptists - which is where I learned that God made women less capable than men - and where I learned that every church has the right to decide their destination and every person gets a vote (you see where the conflict is, of course).

    Then we went Southern Baptist.

(I should remind those that the Texas Southern Baptists bailed when the Southern Baptist Convention came out with its statement concerning women…)

Then I went to college - at Baylor - which is/was Southern Baptist except they jumped ship, because they didn’t like the Baptist board telling them what to do (do you see where I get it?). I was a double major - religion and communication - and I had GREAT professors and I still think Baylor is an incredible school.

I worked and lived in the inner-city, and that is 6 months worth of blogging, so, I’ll just put some links here - the church - http://www.churchunderthebridge.org/ and the ministry - http://www.missionwaco.org

Then I worked as a newspaper reporter and a cocktail waitress (except I didn’t know that’s what I was hired as - and I didn’t know anything about alchohol..).

Then I moved to GR (5 years ago), worked in various ministries, and then threw up my hands and began doing floral design!

Now I do wedding flowers, answer the phones for a minstry in town and occasionally try to finish my Masters - except I hate my classes - spheres of liberal tyranny!

I know JustPat because she and I go to the same church. I know Captain Wow because she’s JustPat’s friend.

Whew! And that was the short version!
